HOW WBLC BEGAN:
The We Believe Lacrosse Classic began 5 years ago as a way to galvanize the lacrosse community to be able to give back to teens and young adults battling cancer when then 17 year old DeMatha Catholic High School senior Matt Miller was in the midst of battling Testicular Cancer. Matt was diagnosed one week before signing his division one college lacrosse scholarship! Matt would battle his senior year and go through a grueling treatment to make it back in time to lead his 2008 Lacrosse Team to a WBLC Championship! This event has had some of the TOP players in the country playing in honor of either their personal cancer warrior or an adopted "We Believe" warrior. Each year 90-100 College Division I, II or III representing 24 Colleges and Universities. The day is now know for it's AMAZING AUCTION, the upclose personal contact with college lacrosse stars and the inspiring stories of young cancer warriors! NEW FOR OUR 2012 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY: This year we have invited Adaptive Lacrosse to compete in their own game. This is a group of warriors in thier own right. Their goal like many cancer warriors is to be "Just treated normal". So on this day although they as lacrosse players face different challenges than the average player, we look forward to watching them conquer those challenges. WBLC is proud to be another avenue to fullfill thier mission. We are thrilled to start a NEW TRADITION! We are proud to introduce the 1st We Believe Junior All-Star Lacrosse Championship Games for both Boys and Girls. This will display the top Junior (8th grade) players nominated from Maryland lacrosse recreation organizations, such as AYLA, CAC, DAA, GORC, SYLA and more. Each team will have a young cancer warrior as thier "Honorary Captain". In addition, top men's and women's college players will be on the sidelines with them as their coaches! The buzz is out and we hope that this honor becomes sought out year after year. |
